What and why
Microsoft Teams live chat is being retired. Starting in August 2026, new customers will no longer be able to set up Microsoft Teams live chat. Starting in October 2026, Microsoft Teams live chat will no longer be supported and will stop relaying customer chat messages from websites to Teams.
This retirement allows us to focus investments on newer customer engagement and communication experiences.
Rollout schedule
Early August 2026: New customers can no longer set up Microsoft Teams live chat.
Early October 2026: Microsoft Teams live chat support ends and the service stops relaying customer chat messages.
Rollout completion is expected by mid-October 2026.

What will happen
Beginning in early August 2026, new customers will no longer be able to configure Microsoft Teams live chat.
Beginning in early October 2026, Microsoft Teams live chat will no longer be supported.
The live chat widget will no longer relay customer chat messages from websites to Teams.
Historical customer chat content stored in the Teams channel used for live chat will remain available and will not be removed as part of this retirement.
Action required and recommendations
Administrators using Microsoft Teams live chat should:
Remove the Microsoft Teams live chat widget from all websites by October 5, 2026. On the HTML pages where the widget is embedded, look for the <script> tag with id="chatbot" and remove it.
Notify internal users who rely on Microsoft Teams live chat about the retirement and resulting service interruption.
Review existing customer engagement workflows and implement an alternative solution before support ends.
